When shipping via Hawaiian Air Cargo rest assured that your lei will be kept in refrigeration before and after the flight. Until you are ready to pick up, the lei will be chilled.
Do I need to be home for my FedEx delivery?
We highly recommend providing a delivery location where someone can receive your order upon arrival. The box should be opened, checked, and refrigerated immediately. Should there not be a person at your home, we recommend a family member's home, neighbor, or perhaps your address of employment. Another option would be a cooler with ice for your FedEx driver to store your box in.
Lei Care
How do I take care of a lei?
- Open the box immediately to release any hot air.
- Loosen up the lei if needed. To loosen, gently fluff the lei so the bottom layer is not warm. If the paper lining feels wet, please replace it with paper towels or newspaper.
- Orchid lei can last up to 7 days when properly cared for.
- DO NOT store it in the freezer! It is important that they are not too hot or too cold.
- If a lei looks soft, you may sprinkle it with water, place it in a Ziploc bag or plastic bag and put it back in the refrigerator to revive the flower. Set your refrigerator on its warmest setting. The ideal temperature is 45 degrees to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
What are some general tips for all lei and orchid blooms?
For smaller orders, store them on the bottom shelf of your refrigerator, for example in a vegetable bin lined with newspaper.
Do not place near the back of the fridge.
Carefully place the lei in a plastic bag.
For large/bulk orders, make sure the lei are stored in either a walk-in refrigerator, a flower cooler, or similar. If a refrigerator is unavailable, lei can be stored in a cooler with ice.
Make sure the lei do not touch the ice, instead put some newspaper or a towel on top of the ice.
If none of the above is available, store the lei in an air-conditioned room and avoid heat and direct sunlight.
How long does a lei last?
With proper care and refrigeration, a lei can last up to 7 days.
What is lei etiquette?
There are some lei etiquettes to keep in mind. A lei symbolizes a warm expression of affection, so it is essential to accept it graciously and never turn it down. It is also viewed as disrespectful to take off a lei in front of the person who gave it to you. The appropriate way to wear a lei is to gently drape it over your shoulders, letting it hang evenly in the front and back.
How do I hand carry a lei to the mainland or the outer islands?
We do provide an agricultural packing service! If you are looking to take a fresh beautiful lei from the island of Oahu to the outer islands or the U.S. Mainland, we seal and agricultural stamp your lei box. All food, plants, and other agricultural items must be presented and checked with the USDA inspector at the airport before departure from the state of Hawai'i.
Once sealed and stamped your lei box cannot be opened until it reaches its final destination.
Our agricultural packing service is complimentary, no charge with your lei purchase.
An agricultural stamp is not needed if you are wearing your lei. However, you may be subject to a random inspection.
Flowers
Do our orchid lei smell?
No, our orchid lei do not smell. This makes any of our lei great for anyone who is sensitive to fragrant smells. If you are looking for a fragrant lei we would recommend one of our local lei such as the Micro Ginger, Tuberose, or Hilo Maile.
What type of orchid is used to make our lei?
Our lei are made with the Dendrobium orchid which is the largest genus of orchids. In Greek the name “dendrobium” means “life in a tree” which refers to how most orchids grow attached to trees. Most plants produce about 10-12 flowers per stem, and they make great lei and arrangements!
The Dendrobium orchid varies in size and color as well. At the Orchid Lei Company we work with Bom (purple), Sakura (pink), Jade (green), and White Dendrobium orchids. The Jade Dendrobium orchid is the smallest and most delicate, followed by the Sakura and the White. The Bom Dendrobium is the most durable and long-lasting orchid bloom.
What does Bom mean?
The word “Bom” actually stands for “Bombay.” It simply means purple! Our classic Single Bom lei, strung with about 50 Bom Dendrobium orchids, is the most common and popular lei to share the spirit of Aloha.
